It's Never Over Till It's Over


A professional services company hired us to recruit a COO. Due to the position's seniority and influence, a Board-level committee was established to guide the process. It was a difficult search, but we presented a short list and an offer was soon extended. The candidate was about to accept the offer when she discovered that a previous medical condition had resurfaced. While not life-threatening, she felt the condition would interfere with her ability to do a first-rate job for this new company. As well, she thought the stress that comes with the change in employment would aggravate her condition. In the end she declined the offer. And, the backup candidate had accepted another position.

We had presented a highly satisfactory short list and complications had arisen through no fault of our own. But our commitment was to fill the assignment, so we redid the search at no charge. A short time later we presented a new short list from which the ultimately successful candidate was chosen.
